“Patchwork of the Heart” project will also help the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria find solutions to long-term community needs
Through the fundraising efforts of Tapestry at Victoria Harbour residents, over 20 Ukrainian families will receive critical financial and housing support from the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA), an organization committed to finding long-term local solutions to the needs of immigrants and refugees.
Last year, a group of dedicated Tapestry residents partnered with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) to find ways to support the settlement of Ukrainian nationals seeking temporary residency in the Victoria region. More than $20,000 was raised through a province-wide raffle to win the ‘Patchwork of the Heart’, a beautifully crafted quilt which was created by a cohort of Tapestry residents in the ‘Sip & Stitch’ group. The quilt featured a spectacularly embroidered sunflower highlighting the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
“The initiative directly helped Ukrainians arriving in Victoria, vulnerable families and single moms, while also supporting us to find long-term solutions for refugees and immigrants arriving in Victoria every year,” says Chief Executive Officer of ICA, Shelley D’Mello. “Around 90 million people around the world have been forced to flee their homes, and we count on the support of the community to be able to respond to their needs as they settle into Victoria,” D’Mello adds.
Tapestry at Victoria Harbour by Concert Properties fosters a holistic approach to active aging that inspires residents to remain social, healthy and engaged. The “Sip and Stitch” Club is one example of Tapestry’s approach to wellness, which inspires residents to create unique experiences drawing on their talents and interests while engaging in meaningful and purposeful activities that enrich the broader community.
“We are so proud of our residents at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour. The ‘Sip & Stitch’ team of four residents spent an intensive three weeks completing the quilt last year, and we were able to double our $10,000 goal through the sale of raffle tickets with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to ICA,” said Amber Reis, general manager of Tapestry. “We are truly a community with a philanthropic heart, always ready to help those in need,” adds Reis.
Through additional fundraising efforts across Concert Properties, a total of $40,000 has been raised for those impacted by the war in Ukraine. Read our December 2022 blog post for more information.
